Dr. Sanu Maiya Shrestha
A Journey of Compassion and Expertise
Dr. Sanu Maiya Shrestha (Pradhan) is a trailblazer in the field of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) treatment in Nepal. Her journey from experiencing infertility to become a leading expert in reproductive medicine is a testament to her resilience, dedication and compassion. At Creator’s IVF Nepal, Dr. Sanu leads with a profound commitment in helping couples achieve their dream of parenthood through personalized, innovative and empathetic care.
Dr. Sanu’s interest in ART started with her own experience of infertility. In 1996, even after a year of marriage, she was unable to conceive. After visiting a renowned gynaecologist who gave her a meager five minutes consultation before prescribing a prosaic hormonal medicine, she thought, “It is a curse to be born infertile in a developing country, where there is a lack of expertise and the technology is so backward.” Dr. Sanu recalls those days as filled with “high stress levels. Her jealousy with her own sisters when they had their babies and her irritability even with her patients and colleagues.” Finally after three years of childlessness, she was able to overcome her infertility problem. Since suffering from the problem and overcoming it, Dr. Sanu’s aim was to gain expertise in the reproductive medicine in order to treat infertile women. Her dream came true when she was awarded the AUS AID Scholarship for Masters in Obstetrics/Gynaecology (Reproductive Medicine) at the University of New South Wales, Australia in 2001. She completed her MSc. in Obs/Gynae (Reproductive Medicine) from UNSW in 2004. She was trained in Transvaginal Doppler Ultrasound for ART in Australia as part of her Masters Study. Her Thesis was on “Longitudinal Assessment of Ovarian and Endometrial Vascularity by Power Doppler Ultrasound during Spontaneous and Stimulated Ovarian Cycles in Assisted Reproduction Treatment” (ref. to Thesis). She has also published scientific papers from her thesis and had presented scientific papers in different conferences (ref. to Thesis)
After returning from Australia in 2004, she got a golden chance to work at Om IVF Centre, Om Hospital with Dr. Narendra Malhotra and Dr. Jaydeep Malhotra (IVF Specialists from India). Here, she was able to utilize the fresh knowledge she had gained from Australia and got practical exposure on handling infertile patients.
After three years of experience at Om IVF, in 2007, Dr. Sanu started new IVF centre, “IVF Nepal Pvt. Ltd.” This centre germinated out of her own initiation, but was financially supported by Dr. Gyanendra Man Singh Karki (Senior Consultant Gynaecologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon). Under the leadership of Dr. Sanu Maiya Shrestha, this centre served thousands of infertile couples till July 2015, giving birth to 250 IVF babies. Take home baby rate of this centre was 28.9%. Unfortunately, Dr. Sanu faced the difficulty in upgrading the centre and extending the facilities to more superior ART technologies such as ICSI, Cryopreservation of gametes and zygotes etc.. Dr. Sanu wanted to deliver IVF treatment to the patients on regular basis so that the treatment was uncompromised and individualized as she had learned in Australia. For this having an in house embryologist was essential. Dr. Sanu’s vision to develop in-house qualified embryologist made possible to start uncompromised personalized regular IVF treatment at Creator’s IVF Nepal. Our in-house embryologist Mr. Dijan Vaidya was qualified from Dundee University, UK in 2015/2016, when there was no practicing qualified embryologist in the country. Finally, in August 2015, Dr. Sanu started “Creator’s IVF Nepal Pvt. Ltd. under her leadership with an objective to start personalized regular IVF treatment. First IVF baby of Creator’s IVF Nepal Pvt. Ltd. was born on September 02, 2016.
